“Other than playing on my school’s

Below is just one example of many stories
where our Teens have touched the lives of the senior community.
“A couple weeks ago, I visited with a man
named “Mr. Dave” in his senior living community. His wife
is caring for him in their home and needed someone to stay with him
for the afternoon while she was also helping her father to his doctor
appointment. We were introduced and I noticed a large collection of
airplanes, mostly war planes, in a lot of clear boxes hanging on the
wall. I knew we’d get along great, since I want to be a pilot. I
shook his hand and his bright blue eyes lit up as if he recognized me.
We shared a Coke and I immediately asked him about his planes and told him
about my dream of being a pilot. He told me stories of his life in the
Vietnam War, and I was in complete disbelief. It’s nothing you could
ever read in one of my history books. I spent three hours with “Mr. Dave”,
and I think he enjoyed showing me albums and albums of pictures of his family
and telling war stories, as much as I enjoyed listening to him. What
made it even more cool is that “Mr. Dave” is at the beginning stages of
dementia, yet remembered everything like it was yesterday. We even
worked on a model plane together!! The time went by so fast that day.
When it was time for me to leave, “Mr. Dave” asked me if I’d come back soon
to share another Coke with him soon. I told him yes, and now can’t wait
to see him again. I gave him my phone number and he called me that night to
tell me how much he enjoyed our visit and thanked me for coming-although I
think I was the lucky one.
If it wasn’t for TTSS, I never would have met this incredible man and now friend. |
